Serve Others: The Story
Two words against the whole culture. You were made to serve.
What Bible verse says serve others?
The clearest one is Mark 10:45, Jesus describing His own mission: "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." To minister means to serve. God came down and did not ask to be waited on. He waited on us.
Paul makes it a command for everyone who follows Him: "by love serve one another" (Galatians 5:13). Peter says whatever gift you have, use it to serve others (1 Peter 4:10).
The fight over who is greatest
Mark 10:45 is Jesus' answer to an argument. James and John had just asked for the best seats in His kingdom, and the other ten were angry about it. Jesus called them together and flipped the whole thing: whoever wants to be great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wants to be first shall be servant of all (Mark 10:43-44). In His kingdom the ladder points down.
Why Jesus washed feet
The night before He died, Jesus took a towel and washed His disciples' feet, a job for the lowest servant in the house. Then He told them why: "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you" (John 13:14-15). Service is not a side quest. It is the example.
Why it is on a shirt
Serve Others was our second design, and it is the one that carries the mission. The culture says build your platform, chase your bag, put yourself first. This shirt answers in two words. Wear it and you are making a promise out loud, so live like it.
